The practice of giving thanks before receiving: inhabit the state of what is already fulfilled today
A practice to stop asking from lack and start giving thanks from possession. Spend a few minutes feeling the desire as already fulfilled and act from there.
By Pedro J. Pérez
We often live in waiting: we want something to arrive, and in that waiting we place all our attention on what is missing. Without realizing it, we repeat the feeling of absence and, with it, we push away what we long for so much. Today's practice invites you to make a radical shift: instead of pleading with nostalgia, you will give thanks in advance. It is not about denying your current situation, but about adopting in advance the inner attitude that corresponds to what you long for. Because material results need their time, but your inner disposition can change right now, and it is that disposition that attracts what you seek.
Today you will spend between five and twenty minutes connecting with that longing and living it as something already resolved. It is a simple exercise, with no materials, that you can do at home or in any quiet corner of your routine. The key lies in the attitude: giving thanks in advance, deciding and expressing yourself from the person who has already achieved it.
The practice Duration: 15 minutes
Choose a specific desire
Sit in a comfortable, quiet place. Close your eyes and breathe deeply three times. Think of a longing you have, something that truly matters to you and that has not yet materialized. It can be personal, professional, or relational. Formulate it in the positive and in the present, as if it were already yours: for example, "I have a job I am passionate about" or "my relationship is harmonious and full." Spend two minutes visualizing it clearly.
Give thanks in advance
For the next five minutes, give thanks for that longing as if it were already resolved. Do not ask, do not plead, do not beg. Simply give thanks. You can say it quietly or mentally: "Thank you for this job that is already mine," "Thank you for this health that I already enjoy." Feel the gratitude in your chest, as if the possession were already real. If doubt arises, breathe and give thanks again.
Act from the person who already has it
Now, without getting up, imagine how the person who has already achieved that would act, decide, and speak. What would they do today? What decision would they make? What words would they use? For three minutes, write mentally or on paper (if you have it at hand) one concrete action you can take today from that state. For example, if you want a better job, the person who already has it might update their resume or contact someone. Commit to doing it.
Inhabit the state throughout the day
The exercise does not end when you get up. For the rest of the day, whenever you remember, return to the feeling of gratitude and to the identity of the one who already possesses that. You can use a keyword, such as "thank you," to remind yourself. It is not about pretending it is already here, but about maintaining the inner state. Material results will take as long as they need to take, but you already live in possession.
To reflect on today
At what moment of the day have I gone back to asking from lack instead of giving thanks from possession?
To finish
Creation happens in the inner state, not in the external form. When you give thanks in advance and act as if you already had it, you stop reinforcing absence and begin to summon what you desire. Today you have practiced inhabiting the result before seeing it. Remember: your inner disposition can change right now, and it is that disposition that attracts what you seek.
