The practice of the firm foundation: build today from within

A brief practice to review the inner foundation of your results: what you believe, what you do, and the image you hold of yourself before asking more of your outer life.

By Pedro J. Pérez

There are days when you want to fix what is outside — the number, the answer, the result — and there is no time left to look at what is inside. However, what you sustain on the outside usually has the size of the foundation you have built on the inside. This practice invites you to spend fifteen minutes reviewing that foundation: not to demand more of yourself, but to become someone capable of inhabiting what you desire.

The practice Duration: 15 minutes

  1. Choose a result and notice what it tells you about yourself

Think of an external result that worries you today: a project, a relationship, a goal. Write on a sheet of paper or in your notes what you tell yourself about you when it doesn't turn out as you expect. Spend four minutes just observing it, without correcting it yet.

  2. Separate what you have from what you are

Make a short list of three capacities of yours that don't depend on what you own or on what others approve: learning, keeping a promise, asking for help, starting again. Choose one and write about a recent situation in which you used it. Take three minutes.

  3. Reframe the demand as a practice

Take the critical phrase from the first step and turn it into a training need: 'To sustain this result, I need to practice...'. Complete the sentence with a concrete and realistic verb, not a wish. Spend three minutes refining it until you can take responsibility for it.

  4. Do one small action today that embodies that person

Choose an action of about three minutes that the version of you capable of sustaining that result would do today: tidy a space, send a pending message, finish a small task, or say no to something that distracts you. Do it now, without waiting to feel ready. When you finish, note what changed in the way you look at yourself.

  5. Return to your worth without resting it on the result

Sit for two minutes and complete in writing: 'Today I am worthy because of..., not because of...'. Use something you already are — your way of learning, of caring, of following through — and not a possession or an achievement. Save that sentence to read tonight.

To reflect on today

Tonight, before closing the day, ask yourself: if tomorrow your external results stayed the same, what part of you will have changed today, and how are you going to sustain it?

To finish

Results truly change when the person who sustains them also changes. It is not about touching up the surface, but about reinforcing the foundation with small, repeatable decisions. Today you don't need to have more: you need to inhabit with more truth what you already are.
